If you are booking a children’s entertainer for the first time, it can be a bit bewildering to know how to select the right one. Asking for recommendations from other parents is always a good idea, as well as checking out any reviews or testimonials they may have. But looking at the price of an entertainer can also be a good indication.
As with many industries, in children’s party entertainment you generally get what you pay for. But what exactly is it you are paying for and how much should you expect to pay for a children’s entertainer?
We know that most parents searching for an entertainer for their child’s birthday party are looking for someone experienced who will make sure the children have a great time, and who will take charge and make sure everything goes off without a hitch. Most good family entertainers have spent years honing their craft before they even accept their first party booking. They will keep updating their skills to make sure they are delivering the best entertainment they possibly can. They will have spent time and money choosing a costume and props that are exactly right for their act and of a quality that will withstand numerous parties.
Also, we know parents want someone who is reliable, who will turn up on time and do a great job, and who won’t let them down at the first sign of a better gig. Sadly we hear all too often of parents who have been let down at the last minute by an entertainer who has quoted an unrealistically low price. At Magic 4 Children, we charge a fair price across the board so that we can guarantee the reliability and quality of entertainers at every party.
We talked briefly about using quality costumes and props at all our parties. It doesn’t stop there though. We ensure that we also have top-quality sound equipment at each party that is regularly PAT-tested to ensure it is safe for use. We also have insurance for everyone’s piece of mind. All of these elements obviously cost money to upkeep but we feel it is important to have all this in place so that you, the client, have nothing to worry about. If an entertainer is quoting a ridiculously low price, then it is quite likely that they won’t have the safeguarding elements that we take so seriously in place.
With this in mind, here are a few questions you should ask any entertainer you are thinking of booking whatever your budget.
- How much experience do you have entertaining at children’s parties?
- Who will be my entertainer on the day? (If they can’t definitively answer this, then you should be concerned.)
- What happens if the entertainer is ill or indisposed on the day? Do you have a backup plan?
- Do you have insurance? Is your electrical equipment regularly PAT-tested?
Also check what the entertainment fee actually includes. Some entertainers can seem remarkably cheap, but when you delve a little deeper, you may find that there are lots of add-ons that you require and are not included in the original price.
In terms of how much you should expect to pay, there is no definitive answer as factors such as geographical location and the niche the entertainer is serving can drastically affect pricing. Generally, if they can answer the above questions and come highly recommended, or if you already know that your chosen entertainer is worth their weight in gold, then the chances are they will be charging a fair price and you will get incredibly good value and a lasting memory of a great birthday party for years to come.
